7 Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain can be frustrating. It makes it hard to reach overhead, to lift with the involved arm, or to sleep on your side without pain. There are seven common causes of shoulder pain: Bursitis, Tendinitis, Tendon Tears, Impingement, Dislocation, Arthritis and Fractures. Bursitis is the inflammation of the Bursae sac and results in painful movement. The added bulk of the swollen bursae causes more friction in an already limited space. Bursitis can be caused by chronic or repetitive overuse, acute injuries, Rheumatoid Arthritis/Gout or infection. Tendinitis is usually the result of the wearing down of the tendons that occur slowly over time. This type of shoulder pain is similar to how the sole of your shoe eventually splits from constant wear. The most commonly affect tendons are the rotator cuff and the long head of the biceps. Tendon Tears are caused by acute injury, degenerative changes due to advanced age, long-term overuse or poor posture. Tendon tears can be partial or complete ruptures in the rotator cuff or biceps. Impingement occurs when the top of the shoulder blade puts pressure on the underlying tissues. It generally occurs when lifting the arm away from the body and causes shoulder pain and stiffness. Impingement can lead to Bursitis, Tendinitis and Rotator Cuff Tears. Dislocation occurs when the ball is forced out fo the shoulder socket. This injury can be caused by trauma and/or repetitive strain. You can suffer from a partial or complete shoulder dislocation. Arthritis in the shoulder can be Osteoarthritis, wear and tear arthritis, or other types of arthritis. Shoulder arthritis worsens with time and can be accelerated by work and sports injuries. This leads to the tightening of soft tissues and painful restriction of motion. Fractures can be caused by older individuals falling, motor vehicle accidents or sports injuries.
